French

Preparation for adult life

Students have one lesson of French a week until at age 14 they
can choose to study French as an option. French is taught as a
series of modules such as food and drink, colours, numbers, sports
and free time.
The aims of teaching French are to encourage and develop an insight
into the culture and civilisation of France and other French speaking
countries. This aim supports the European and International dimension
of the school.
We encourage students to understand that there are languages other
than their own and encourage positive attitudes to learning French,
and a sympathetic approach to other cultures, civilisations and
languages.
French is taught by games and role play which fosters enjoyment.
We aim improve personal and social skills by learning to communicate,
cooperating and contributing in the classroom, considering the
views of others and having to adjust to different social conventions.
At 14 students can start to study for OCR entry level accreditation.
Each year a French assistant joins the staff of Abbey Hill and
works in classes with the students. Every two years we organise
a school trip to France
We aim to give students the opportunity to use French in a work
related curriculum or take part in active learning in the community
eg helping with the French Day. The aim of these initiatives is
to provide reinforcement of some of the relevance of learning French
to the world of work with the possibility of enhancing career opportunities.
