It is intended that the science curriculum at Abbey Hill provides students with the support and understanding they need to have a realistic understanding of the world they live in.

As students move on to adult life they will be armed with a wide range of skills to fulfil their individual needs and ease the transition into the future.

Personal

· Through sensing the natural, physical and material world that they live in students can reflect on their own role within it and consider the consequences of their actions in relation to the wider world.

· Communication - Students develop skills to communicate facts, ideas and opinions in a variety of contexts.
· Confidence - Students reflect on what they have done, evaluate their results and celebrate their own achievements.

Social Development

· Students are encouraged to see the need to draw conclusions using observations and evidence rather than preconception or prejudice.
· Students learn to consider that the formation of opinion and the justification of decisions can be informed by experimental evidence.
· Through working with others, students are able to consider and evaluate views that are not their own and take responsible action in an appropriate manner.

Cultural development

· Students recognise that scientific discoveries can affect the way that people think, feel, create, behave and live.
· Students accept that cultural differences can influence the extent to which scientific ideas are accepted, used and valued.

Academic

· Students are encouraged to plan to collect information by following a series of ordered, logical and clearly defined steps.
· Through listening and predicting, students learn to consider that many outcomes may be achieved from one staring point.
· Students solve problems by fining ways to answer scientific questions with creative solutions.
Science at Abbey Hill also promotes the development of:

· Citizenship
· Enterprise and entrepreneurial skills
· Work related learning
