Welcome to the SEB (Sensory Education Base)

Preparation for Working Life

Preparation for working Life

This base is almost like a school within a school with three classes of students who have a range of profound learning difficulties, some students also have associated physical problems as well. Despite this the curriculum we provide for the students is broad and balanced and covers all the areas of the National Curriculum. There is a need to modify what we do to deliver each subject but we use assistive technology where possible to enable each student to take an active part in the curriculum.

Maths Lunchtime activities

The SEB has as the name suggests an emphasis on delivering a curriculum model related to sensory simulation. To this end we have two multi sensory rooms in the SEB. One is called the “White Tower “ even though most of it is blue! The other room is more correct. The “Black” room is designed to take away the sensory stimulation to focus on one particular event or stimulus. This is particularly useful for the students who have autistic tendencies. The room is painted black and single items can be introduced to work through the curriculum without the problems of over stimulation. The use of an ultraviolet lamp can produce dramatic colours on florescent objects.

The students in the SEB are integrated into the main part of the school where possible and students from the main part of school also work and help in the SEB especially at break and lunchtimes. Other curriculum activities in the SEB include ICT with our new electronic whiteboards which can bring virtual environments to the students. Rebound therapy, swimming, hydrotherapy, jacuzzi, horse riding (RDA) environmental studies, shopping skills, music, maths, communication, humanities, science, physiotherapy and much more.

The SEB is fortunate to have very good facilities with a new extension to the building finished quite recently (see the opening of the SEB by Pam Royle from Tyne Tees ) The strapline of Abbey Hill is “Excellence Is Our Standard” and we aim to provide the very best education we can provide for all our students, happy and stimulated students learn the most.
